as St. John's romped to a 6 wicket win over Greenfield CC (Edmonton). Greenfield, filling in for Edmonton Champions Edmonton Cricket Club, batted first and put up an imposing total of 213 from 46 overs. Although St. John's was hampered by the loss of several key bowlers, the Greenfield batsmen batted with purpose and a middle order partnership of 100 runs helped set the table. In response St. John's managed to hang onto their wickets and Rajesh Patel (70)with a gritty half-century, batted with Dimantha DeSilva (36) and Sumit Thapliyal (27) to see St. John's to the total with 10 overs to spare. St. John’s Crush United on Road to Premier Division Championship
9/14/04scoreboard-united
It wasn't the classic heavyweight duel that many had expected. When the dust settled, St. John's became the C&DCL's 3rd league champion in as many seasons with a 136 run victory over United. Batting first under beautiful conditions, Khalid Aziz (2-72) picked up the opening wicket over Dexter Ramoutar to put St. John's on the defensive. Jay Jayasinghe (64) and Keshav Prasad (28) then put together a 100 run partnership that steadied the ship and set the platform for a middle order onslaught from Sumit Thapliyal (73). Thapliyal, who had struggled early on escaped a scare, before getting down to business with some meaty blows from both ends. United looked ready to pounce when a double strike by Basheer Islam (2-27) removed Jayasinghe and Prasad, but Thapliyal and Rajesh Patel dug in and made a stand. Hylton Osborne (3-56) was again United's danger man with the ball and picked up the key wicket of Rajesh Patel (30) to keep United in the game. Injured, he bowled 10 overs on the trot grabbing Thapliyal's and Dev Sharma's (17) wickets also. The last over also proved costly as Rathan Moorthy (13*) and Easan Sinnathamby (15*) smashed 22 runs to see the team to 300.

Chasing 300 is never easy but Nabeel Khan (11), promoted to kick-start the innings, plundered Sumit Thapliyal for some quick runs to get the ball rolling, before succumbing to Dev Sharma (2-19). From there on, United were pegged back every time they got something going. Charanjiv Dhami (28) hung around for a while but was undone by Easan Sinnathamby (3-35). Aziz Chaudhary (18) made a good start to his innings but fell victim to Rajesh Patel (1-19). As he did against Cavaliers, Basheer Islam (30) again attempted a late inning rescue and along with Imran Asif (32) gave St. John's some frights but with the required run rate growing, Islam had to take chances and holed out to Dimantha DeSilva to end the match..

St. John's are the 2004 Nolan Cup Champions and will take on Edmonton CC next Saturday at Riley Park. A return to championship form and their 10th championship since 1956, which is first on the all time list. United, although disappointed with the loss should be proud of a fantastic season that saw them fight St. John’s to the wire and pick up the Club Championship title along the way. scorecard
