Dhami and Chaudhary head to Toronto 09/13/05
The Canadian Selectors have backed Calgary's Manzoor Chaudhary and Charanjiv Dhami to done the Red Cap in the upcoming matches against the MCC in Toronto. The two matches (1 one day match and one 3 day match) will take place next week as part of the MCC tour to Canada. After some irregularities with the selection of the team that lost heavily to Bermuda the selectors have left no room for doubt and selected the playing XI for both matches. Chauhdary and Dhami are both well deserved in the playing XI for their respective matches.
Dhami, who’s knock of 84 vs Quebec at the IPT turned heads, will represent CANADA A and Chaudhary after some solid performance in Vancouver will play for CANADA in the 3 day match. Monzy has also been named Vice Captain of the squad.
Best of luck to both players as they will leave Sunday for Toronto.

Ramkelawan Brilliant in u25 Clash
8/22/05 - Geoffrey Crosse
Many players have scored hundreds, and some have even scored them at will, but in terms of seizing the initiative in an intercity contests Edmonton opener Jacob Ramkelawan’s was a class apart. His team mates and his fans watched as he showed great batsmanship. He belted a thrilling 104 of 183 balls on the first day and 40 of 38 balls on second day of the match. What impressed me the most was his composure under some very difficult conditions, he stayed cool under is green helmet and gave his team a chance to win this one off test.
Earlier, Edmonton U25 won the toss and elected to bat under cloudy but humid conditions. Given a solid 50 opening wicket partnership with Riaz, Jacob soon found him standing alone as 3 wickets fell for the next 30 Runs. At 80 for 3 the ever so reliable Kenndon Ottley arrived to the crease. With his West Indian suave he stroked himself 83 of 135 balls, providing the much need partnership of 149 runs with centurion Jacob. Edmonton finally declared at 253 for 5 forcing Calgary U25 to face a tough last hour of play.
As expected, Edmonton came out all fired up riding hot on Jacob’s 104. Edmonton picked up 4 cheap wickets for 44 runs closing the first day play on a high. Calgary U25 did have an average day there were flashes of brilliance but just when it seemed they had control of the game Edmonton U25 came up with the goods.
Day 2 was a day of survival, Calgary had to bat all day to save this match a win was not possible as Edmonton were firmly in the driving seat. If it wasn’t for vice captain Imran Khans stubborn knock of 33 in 2 ½ hours Calgary would certainly have lost the game as Zain Amir 3 for 11 Akeel 2 for 17 and Ricky 2 for 19 had Calgary all out for 119 in the first innings.
What would have been the turning point of the match was a decision perhaps Edmonton boys would have loved to have back. They opted not to force the follow on but bat to set a total in access of 200. With a lead of 134, Jacobs 40 not out and a quick fire knock from Azim Ali (Zoom Zoom) Edmonton tried to take Calgary apart however Talal Paracha (match figures of 3 for 69) and Nasir Abbas (match figures 3 for 81) contained Edmonton to a certain degree. Edmonton declared at 88 for 4 and gave Calgary 216 to chase in about 35 overs or 2.5 hours.
Edmonton could considered themselves rather unlucky. The game was finally called off with Calgary at 96 for 6.
It was certainly an entertaining two days game some brilliant performances from both ends and as awards were given out, MVP & Best Batsman went to Jacob, Best Bowler Ricky (Match figures 5 for 38) Best Fielder was split between Zain Amir and Yawar Abbas who both grabbed 3 catches each.
Sinnathamby back to Intercontinental Cup
8/17/05
The Canadian Selectors have gone back to the bullpen to pull out a fresh arm for the upcoming Intercontinental Cup matches against Bermuda and the Cayman Islands at the end of August. Alberta's Easan Sinnathamby, on the back of some excellent bowling at the recently completed Inter-provincial tournament in Vancouver, will make his 5 appearance for Canada and his 2nd at the Intercontinental Cup. Sinnathamby who last played for Canada in a victory against the United States in 2004 is in the middle of a good season for his club and will look to build on that and his IPT performance at the next level.
The future is looking bright across the country for cricket and the showings of prairie cricketers at the IPT are sure to keep the CCA looking west. According to Prairie Selector Christopher James "...several players from the western provinces impressed us. Players like Suresh Jayaraman from Manitoba, (Charanjiv) Dhami and Manzoor Chaudhary from Alberta are promising to the future of Canadian cricket. Easan had a good tournament and will get another opportunity to represent Canada at the top level."
Canada vs. Bermuda - August 23rd - 25th Qasir Ali (PQ), Umar Bhatti (ON), George Codrington (ON), Desmond Chumney (ON), Pubudu Dassanayake - Captain (ON), Sunil Dhaniram (ON), Haninder Dhillon (BC), Channa Kurunaratne (BC), Don Maxwell (ON), Kevin Sandher (BC), Easan Sinnthamby (AB), Zubin Zurkari (ON).
Canada vs. Cayman Islands - August 31st - September 2nd Umar Bhatti (ON), George Codrington (ON), Desmond Chumney (ON), Pubudu Dassanayake - Captain (ON), Sunil Dhaniram (ON), Iain Dixon (BC), Channa Kurunaratne (BC), Don Maxwell (ON), Henry Osinde (ON), Kevin Sandher (BC), Easan Sinnthamby (AB), Zubin Zurkari (ON).
Alberta gets off to an even start at IPT 8/3/05
A poor batting performance overshadowed some brilliant bowling from Easan Sinnathamby (2-20) and Hylton Osbourne (2-14) who had BC reduced to 12-3 before a partnership from Manoj David (26) and Channa Karunaratne (43) took the game away from Alberta as BC sped past the minimal target of 116 set by Alberta
Wednesday turned out to be a much better day for the Albertan squad as Osbourne again did damage with the ball (10-2-28-2) joined by Sumit Thapliyal (2-10) and Rakesh Patel (2-34) to remove a dangerous Quebec batting order for 209. Patel (17*) and Thapliyal (20*) helped wrap up a run chase with 2 overs to spare building on an impressive platform set by Chanranjiv Dhami’s (84) and Farrukh Abbas (40) who took the game away from Quebec in the middle overs. Alberta takes on Ontario on Thursday and Manitoba on Friday to close out the tournament.Updates as they happen on www.cricket.ab.ca/albertacricket
Alberta Pacer Adnan Kamal Cracks Canadian U19 Squad M. Ahuja - 07/18/05
Slowly becoming a regular trend, Alberta's youth continue to push for national spots and look to mark their presence on the international under-19 circuit. Following Jacob Ramkhelawan's (2001) and Aabid Keshvani's (2003-04) footsteps, this year it is the athletic 18-year-old pace-bowling all-rounder Adnan Kamal who will don national colours later this summer. A leading wicket-taker for his club in Edmonton and a permanent fixture on the city and provincial youth sides, Kamal's selection is backed by his rich experience and consistent performances from a young age. He represented Alberta at the 2002 Canada Cup as a promising 15-year-old, showing potential in all three departments (113 runs, 5 wkts, 5 catches). The following year, Kamal dominated with the new ball for Alberta at the Western Canada u17 Tournament/Camp in Vancouver on his way to becoming the leading wicket-taker of the tournament. Back at his second Canada Cup stint in 2004, Kamal made good the opportunities given to him, batting consistently at #4 and sitting atop the tournament bowling averages. Leading the Alberta attack, Kamal took 11 wickets at a tremendous average of 6.82 apiece in 4 innings and was one of the pillars of the medal-winning team. Kamal will be leaving for Toronto shortly to train with the national u19 team and get a few games in the T&DCA premier with the CCA u23 side in preparation for the ICC u19 Americas Cup which doubles up as a World Cup qualifying tournament. Canada are the defending champions and this year's hosts for this significant regional tournament, which runs from August 7-13 at King City, Ontario. The competition includes USA, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Argentina and the hosts Canada. The winner of this tournament secures a ticket to the 2006 u19 World Cup in Kenya.
Calgary Masters Make Clean Sweep Contributions from John Farley and Ron Saywack 07/18/05
Under cold and raining conditions at Riley Park, Calgary won the toss and elected to bat first in a rain-truncated match which was reduced to 35 overs. Despite the soggy weather the match was played in good spirits and Calgary edged out their northern counterparts by 12 runs:
Saturday Highlights: Calgary 184 Batting: Ron Saywack 47, Max Richards 21, Art Alfonso 33 (retired out) and Mike Singh 20. Bowling: Mark Duncan 5-0-7-3
Edmonton 172 Batting: Don Balgobin top scored with a hard-hitting 72, ably abetted by Ron Hansraj's equally blistering 33. Bowling: Ken Persaud 2-34, Motilall Deonie 2-40
The vets made it a clean sweep over Edmonton on Sunday, winning by 6 wickets. With clear blue skies and brilliant sun shine all around, the visitors won the toss and did not hesitate to take first strike. On this day, they took the field with a much stronger side than the day before and aggressively came after the Calgary bowlers from the word go.
Mustapher Ali, who played high-level cricket in Guyana for the prestigious Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) at Bourda, a WI Test cricket venue, smashed a scintillating, whirlwind century which included 14 huge sixes and 3 fours. He was finally caught deep on the mid-wicket boundary in the 35th over by Ivan Mahelal off the lone over by Ron Saywack, bowling strategically round the wicket. Anil Velji, with his slow aerial lollipops, quickly wrapped up the 9th and 10th wickets in his lone over. The other notable scorer for Edmonton was B. Singh with 24.
In reply Calgary lost an early wicket but Trevor Defreitas' (35) initial partnership with Angelo Alfonso (34) was the solid foundation to chase the total. The loss of Defreitas brough Skipper Arthur Alfonso (60) together with his brother and the two put on a solid 80 run partnership. The loss of 2 quick wickets joined yesterdays' star Saywack (18*) and Ron Jadusingh (35*) who with some poise and determination brought the game home with Saywack clearing the mid-wicket boundary in the 36th over to finish the match.
Sunday Highlights: Batting: Angelo Alfonso 36, Trevor Deferitas 34, Arthur Alfonso 60, Ron Jadusingh 35* and Ron Saywack 18*. Bowling: Ron Jadusingh 1-16, Ivan Mahelal 2-21, Angelo Alfonso 2-46, Ron Saywack 1-10. Anil Velji 2-2
Following the game C&DCL President Muhammad Pasha and the Edmonton skipper Khalid Bacchus both strongly stressed the need for trophies to be made for this event to be presented at next year's Masters games in Edmonton.
Congratulations to Calgary on the victory and thanks to all who helped organize to make the event a success.

Canada Qualify for the 2007 Cricket World Cup 07/07/05
Put another feather in the cap of Canadian cricket as for the second time this decade, Canada will participate in one of the worlds most prestigious sporting events, the ICC Cricket World Cup. Although the ICC Trophy qualifying tournament will continue into next week, Canada guaranteed themselves a top 4 tournament finish with a convincing win over Papa New Guinea and a Dutch loss to Scotland.
Canada, picked by many not to qualify, squeaked out 3 wins against tough opposition before thrashing Papa New Guinea to finish 2nd in Group B. The tournament semifinals and final will take place this weekend to secure seedings for the world cup. Denmark, Holland, Namibia, and the UAE will fight it out for the fifth and final spot.
When contacted to hear his reaction to the news, CCA Selector for the Praries Chris James had the following comment.
" To return to the world cup is a big step for Canadian cricket and we're very proud of our boys ... As selectors we have a tough job ahead of us but I am confident that we have the ability in this country to better our performance from South Africa (2003 ICC World Cup) "
From an Alberta perspective the news was positive knowing that there will be a chance of an Albertan on the world cup squad. Said James " ...certainly there are players from the Praries who have a good chance to be in the West Indies in 2007 and they will have ample opportunity at the interprovincial tournament to prove themselves... "
At the conclusion of this tournament, all eyes will shift to Vancouver for the Interprovincial scheduled to take place from August 1st - 5th. Alberta expects to release its squad next week.

Alberta Looks Forward After Poor Showing at Trials 05/25/05
At long last we have an answer. Since winning the U25 National IPT over a decade ago, Alberta has sat and waited as the national team passed over talented cricketers from our province in favour of players from out east. Last weekend Alberta Cricket was allowed to reset their targets as several Alberta based players struggled to make their mark at the Victoria Day Long Weekend Cricket Festival in Toronto. The white ball and unexpectedly bouncy turf wicket made it difficult for the Albertan's to settle into any sort of groove.
The bright spot of the weekend, for Alberta, was certainly Salman Choudhary's 44 runs in 57 balls. Clearly his knock demonstrated that there is the ability in the province to succeed at the next level and now a bit more experience in needed to take the next step. Senior Selector Chris James commented on the players "We in Alberta and Manitoba do not have sufficient means with which to measure ourselves against the players in the national program ... the CCA must provide an environment like last weekend for players across the country to see where they are at on a consistent basis ... the Alberta based players did struggle but I commend those players that prepared and tried their best. I believe that the Alberta Cricket Academy will play a key role in our future development in providing the coaching and training structure required for our players to be successful as we move forward ... All I can say is Now we know".
When approached, Academy Director Rathan Moorthy spoke very optimistically about the future of Alberta cricket in the current batch of u23 cricketers. “Our boys have played very well in winning the last two Western Canadian u23 tournaments and in claiming the Bronze Medal at the 2004 Canada Cup. Their successes are starting to show at the Intercity levels as the dynamic of Alberta Cricket starts to get younger. The Academy will take as much feedback as we can from the players that traveled to Toronto and look to add to our training methodology to give our players the best chance at the national level.”
Administratively the ACA has received the message and will no doubt strive to improve the playing conditions for its players. Already the Edmonton v Calgary Intercity match has moved to use of the white ball and coloured clothing which will certainly deal with the issues of our players not being used to the ball. The issue of facilities and turf wickets will also need to be addressed as new cricket grounds come on line in the coming years.
Although not what Albertan's had hoped for there are building blocks and the onus remains on the CCA to deliver on national trials and the IPT on a regular basis to create the best opportunity to pick a truly competitive national program
Alberta Prepares for Victoria Day Weekend 05/17/05 Ravin Moorthy
After being essentially shut out of the CCA and the national programs for the past several years, Alberta gets their chance to shine at the Victoria Day Cricket Festival in Toronto this weekend. The excitement was palpable at Riley Park in Calgary over the weekend as players mused about the possibilities after finally getting an opportunity to shine on the national stage. Despite the optimism, there was still a large shadow of doubt cast over the whole national selection process with the treatment of Alberta's players last year foremost in the minds of many.
Should the players be concerned? Will the two paceman, Amjad Shehzad and Salman Choudhary, be given an opportunity to work a significant number of overs to show their worth? Will the batsmen be put in positions to succeed and demonstrate their talent or asked to come down the order and swing the bat after the Ontario players have had their workout? These are legitimate questions and ones that cannot be answered until after the weekend. Another aspect that will be watched closely is the umpiring. There was a huge controversy about the umpiring at the Canada Cup last year. Alberta players and management felt disadvantaged by some decisions that went against them at the Canada Cup and a repeat of that at King City would be absolutely devastating to any player's chances.
When pressed for an answer regarding the concerns of many Albertans, CCA Selector for the Prairies, Chris James, commented that “I do not expect the umpiring to be an issue this weekend or at least I hope it's not an issue. As selectors, we are going to evaluate the talent and select the best team for our Country, regardless of where they are from.”
Heading north on Highway 2, Edmonton’s preparations for the annual Western Canadian u23 tournament continue. As one of the ACA’s signature events, the tournament will bring the top u23 players from Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan to 3 days of intense competition.

Ontario Hosts Senior Trials 5/10/05 Article written by Errol Townshend
Toronto may be a world away from Riley or Stanley Parks, but the keen Alberta-B.C. rivalry will continue at the Victoria Day Cricket Festival slated for Toronto's Sunnybrook Park May 21-23.That's the three-day event being put on jointly by the Ontario Cricket Association and the Canadian Cricket Association to give Canada's national selectors a last look at the candidates before picking the 14-man squad to the ICC Trophy in Ireland this summer. The top five teams in Ireland go on to the 2007 World Cup.The national selectors have allocated the Alberta and B.C.candidates to opposing teams as those on the Provisional List of 30 joust for places in what is building up to be an intensely competitive three days of cricket featuring Canada's elite players. The matches are 60-overs affairs with white balls and coloured clothing. Alberta's Jacob Ramkelwan, Salmon Chaudhary, Manzoor Chaudhary, Amjad Shehzad and Sumit Thapliyal have been assigned to the Ontario President's X1 while British Columbians Ian Dixon,John Davison,Haninder Dhillon,Sajeeve Fernando,Chana Kularantna,Kevin Sandher have been assigned to the CCA President's X1."With so much heat being generated leading up to this event we thought it would be wise to keep these guys apart", said one tournament organizer who requested anonimity between a huge grin. All players must play a minimum of two games.Zubin Surkari and Sunil Dhaniram, who have injuries, must play all three games.Meanwhile, the umpires have been named for the event. The panel represents a careful balancing of the regional, ethnocultural and quality factors in Ontario. Former Canadian (1990) and Sri Lankan (1979) ICC Trophy squad member, paceman Kantha Shantikumar, one of the few ex-national squad players to take up umpiring, gets his first chance on the national stage.
He is joined by Kantilal Patel, originally from India, who is one of the top umpires in Canada.
