Alberta Cricket Prepares for First Twenty/20 Tounament
04/29/08

canada-cup-logo The Alberta Cricket Association T20 Tournament is set to get underway, May 3th and 4th in Calgary at Riley Park. The ACA has passed on an open invitation to all Calgary cricketers, supporters, and enthusiasts to attend the tournament and cheer on teams for both Alberta and Saskatchewan. Games start Saturday at 9am with the team from the CDCL playing Saskatchewan and EDCL playing a team of Alberta Selects. The teams will play a round robin format on Saturday, followed by a Semi Final and Finals on Sunday. Games will take place at 9am, 12:45pm and 4pm on Saturday. Sunday, the Semis go at 9am with the Finals going off at 12:45pm. This tournament is a warm up for the boys from Saskatchewan and those selected for Alberta to travel to Toronto for the Nationals, May 17th to 19th.

The newest addition to the cricket family is causing a fuss worldwide. In 2007, the ICC hosted its first T20 World Cup in South Africa. A young Indian team came out on top of the heap. Soon after that the first of two T20 leagues started in India. The second of these two leagues has taken the cricket world by storm. The IPL is to cricket what professial sports are across the world. T20 may change the face of cricket for ever.
This year the Canadian Nationals is being played in the T20 format. This is the form of the game Cricket Canada feels best suits Canada chances on the world stage.

Judge for yourself, come see what the fuss is about.

CCA Names Four Albertan's to 40 Man Training Squad
01/27/06
cca-50As Alberta continually looks to gain representation on the national team, hopes for 2006 will lie in a share of familiar and new faces.  On Friday, the CCA released its 40 man training squad including perennial prospects Manzoor Chaudhary and Easan Sinnathamby. New comers Charanjiv Dhami and Edmonton's wicket keeping sensation Kendon Ottely will round out the four.

After a good Alberta showing at the 2005 IPT, Chaudhary, Sinnathamby, Dhami and Ottely all gained from the increased exposure and look toward the opportunity of representing Canada in 2006.

Congratulations go out to all four Alberta players on this recognition.

Gujarat Reclaims Tahir Cup
9/30/05
gcc-smallCongratulations to Eddmonton's Gujarat Cricket Club on reclaiming the Tahir Cup after an impressive victory over Calgary's CanAsia Cricket Club.

The match played on a beautiful late September day at Victoria Park gave little for the visitors to be happy about as an batting attack led by Gujarat and man of the match winning batsmen Nilesh Patel (99*) and opening partner Harish Patel (73)
left a strong CanAsia bowling attack searching for answers.

Alberta Bound
MCC in Alberta 2005
9/30/05 - Tony Pasternak
mcc-smallIn the timeless debate on the merits of journey versus destination, for Gordon Lightfoot and his songwriting back in 1971 the latter was the clear winner. 34 years later it was ditto for Col. Tim Lerwil's and Captain Tom Harrison's Marylebone Cricket Club A Grade squad and the Calgary stop on their 2005 Canada tour. On a reasonably frigid late September day at Riley Park, MCC achieved their prime aim of promoting hi-grade cricket in the outposts by sporting example on the field and professional behaviour off it, first quickly adapting to the somewhat fierce weather conditions and ultimately exposing the possibilities for scoring groundstrokes on Riley's perennially slow outfield, and finally with their attack tying the Alberta XI batsmen in more knots than a herd of rodeo calves.

When Lightfoot was penning his Alberta classic, the MCC's Neil Kendrick was likely just off his bowling mark, no doubt already toddling in to deliver back-yard spin back in Bromley. In these parts, five seconds is a good calf-roping time, but the ex-Surrey left-arm convinced for an unbroken 10-over spell that variably-flighted, good-length deliveries can repeatedly lassoo their dogies in much less time than that.

With nine-test veteran Richard Illingworth simultaneously and elegantly constructing his own 10- over web from the other end, and with the southpaw pair sharing six wickets equally between them for a paltry 27 runs, the paralyzation of Alberta's batting was complete. It quivered a little while keeper Anuraj Gupta, last-minute replacement for Edmonton's Damien Persaud, and Rathan (Rabbit) Moorthy forged the best Alberta partnership, but that was for the last wicket, though from 84 for 9 it seemed almost a micro-triumph that AB had passed half the MCC total of 235.
